In Peru, heart attacks, strokes and cancers are the most common cause of early adult deaths. Chronic vascular diseases (diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol) and obesity and smoking are the most important causes of heart attacks and strokes. The most common cancers in Peru are stomach and cervical cancer. Siempre Salud and three communities lying on Peru’s south coastal desert developed a system of prevention, early detection and primary care of these illnesses at a cost that is equivalent to $3.50 per household per month (less than 3% of average household income).
The following slide show illustrates our basic program services as they apply to south coastal desert communities in Peru
Siempre Salud is a community-based organization not a disease-based organization. Each community is unique and has unique health priorities. Our intention as we move forward is to use limited resources to target each community’s most serious and prevalent health problems. We will further refine the target list by selecting problems that are most effectively prevented at the lowest cost by care protocols that Siempre Salud and its partners and communities can implement with the highest degree of quality.
